12) Past Perfect (I had eaten)

I had started.	Başlamıştım.
You had started.	Başlamıştınız.
He had started.	Başlamıştı.
She had started.	Başlamıştı.
It had started.	Başlamıştı.
We had started.	Başlamıştık.
They had started.	Başlamışlardı.

I had taken it. (Onu almıştım.)
veya
I'd taken it. (Onu almıştım.)
They had not started. (Başlamamışlardı.)
veya
They hadn't started. (Başlamamışlardı.)

A year ago : (Bir yıl önce: )
Jenny is flying to Rome. She thinks, "I have never been on a plane before now."
(Jenny Roma'ya uçuyor. Düşünür "Bundan önce hiç uçağa binmedim.)

Now: (Şimdi:)
Jenny flew to Rome last year. She had never been on a plane before that.
(Jenny geçen yıl Roma'ya uçtu. Ondan önce hiç uçağa binmemişti.)

Geçmiş zamanda bir olay ya da durumdan bahsettiğimiz zaman Past Simple kullanırız . O zamandan önce bir olaydan bahsedersek Past Perfect kullanırız.
Last Saturday at the cinema: (Geçen Cumartesi sinemada:)
Mary: We don't need to queue because I've already bought the tickets.
(Kuyruğa girmemeliyiz , çünkü zaten biletleri satın aldım.)

Now: (Şimdi:)
Mary: We didn't need to queue because I had already bought the tickets.
(Kuyruğa girmemeliydik , çünkü zaten biletleri satın almıştım.)

Not: Never ve already kelimeleri geçmiş zaman tanımından önce kullanılır.

Geçmişteki bir seri olaydan bahsederken sıra ile Past Simple kullanırız.
A I saw a beautiful bird in my garden. (Bahçemde güzel bir kuş gördüm.)
B I went to get my camera. (Kameramı almaya gittim.)
C The bird flew away. (Kuş uçup gitti.)
D I returned with my camera.(Kameramla geri döndüm.)

past       A B C D    < now >
Olaylardan biri sırasıyla değilse Past Perfect kullanmak gerekir.
D I returned with my camera. (Kameramla geri döndüm.)
C The bird had already flown away. (Kuş zaten uçup gitmişti.)
(The bird had gone before I returned.) (Ben dönmeden önce kuş gitmişti.)

Past Perfect: When I returned with my camera, the bird had flown away.
(The bird went before I returned.)
Past Simple: When I returned with my camera, the bird flew away.
(The bird went after I returned.)

Geçmişte yapılan konuşmalar aktarılırken Past Perfect kullanılır.
I have suffered from asthma for many years.
(Senelerdir astımdan acı çektim.)
She told the doctor that she had suffered from asthma for many years.
(Doktora onun senelerdir astımdan acı çekmiş olduğunu söyledi.)
